General Discussion / Re: November Match Predictions
« on: November 08, 2024, 04:43:06 PM »
I predict...

I'm actually going to show up for the first time in over a year. Guns oiled, bag packed, cart just needs a wipe down.

Looking forward to seeing this great group again!

For use by my lady and I as a training aid in firearms basics classes. We no longer wish to use our "good" guns for this purpose.

Needs to be presentable in appearance, in a common center fire caliber (based on available snap caps).

While it can be a reliable shooter, really just need something which "functions" for typical load, cock, "fire," decock, and unload manipulation. SASS legal is not important.

So OK for something with soft strikes, misfires, etc. Need to look reasonably good and have NO hiccups in manipulation with snap caps (again, for basic students).

May be an opportunity to go into your safe for a problem child and have it do good.

On edit: Found one.

General Discussion / And on the topic of helping...
« on: August 23, 2021, 05:22:18 PM »
I would like to help more at the monthlies (when I can get there).

Two shoots back, I had no extra time as I was also setting up my lady sharing my equipment.

This has been bugging me since the last shoot I attended (2 months ago?)

Some of you know I will always help with teardown. I actually blew it at the last shoot two months ago by being on the 6 stage posse. If I had know the 5 stage posse was going to tear down two stages, I would have been on that posse.

Besides teardown though, I can not pick brass. I just can not see it in the gravel. I can see dozens of pieces of my brass gleaming from 100 yards away, and can not spot it in front of my toe.

I am willing to try spotting. Any other thoughts on how I can help? Assuming my lady is not with me, and then I will still help tear down.

Anyway, I want to do more to help out at shoots when I can make it there.

General Discussion / Getting started with the '97
« on: August 23, 2021, 05:14:18 PM »
My SxS is down, need to learn the '97.

Thread on main forum here:

https://forums.sassnet.com/index.php?/topic/321637-need-help-getting-started-with-a-97/

Hoping to come shoot in October. Suggestion in that thread to ask for local help.

OK, can anyone please help?

Just paying it forward, I'm not going to name names but I have been loaned equipment in the past.

Well, get thee to a match!

If I'm there, and you let me know in advance (and I fix a problem with my shotgun) you can borrow that. I have enough 12GA shells to spare you for a match.

Not sure about July at the moment, eyeing August for my next match.

Likely others will also loan other firearms for you to try.

My Stoeger SxS is a good gun, my shells are a bit stiffer than I would like. I've been loaned better than mine with lighter shells An SKB with light loads is a pleasure to shoot.

But you asked about revolvers. For revolvers, you really ned to handle a bunch of them. What model, what grips, what caliber, what hammer, and more; you have a lot of questions you did not ask.

A match is the best place to get started before you spend money.

BTW, I'm pretty new at this sport, have more experience in other sports. I too am headed down the black powder path but probably not get to reloading until this winter.

Get thee to a match!

General Discussion / Re: Your Choice Five or Six Stages
« on: June 13, 2021, 07:49:00 PM »
A part of the reason for only shooting five stages was to avoid the heat of the day.

With the understanding I did choose to shoot all six stages... I did this as helping with teardown is something I can do to help.

When splitting posses, I was thinking the posse shooting six stages should start at stage one. That way, those wanting to only shoot five stages don't have to wait around for us gluttons for punishment.

Several "five stage shooters" shooters ended up with stage six as the "fourth" stage, and at the end of the day, did not get to avoid the heat by skipping the time the "sixth" stage required.

But then I started wondering... Who tore down the other bays? Those on that posse only shooting 5 stages? Did the other posse tear down the other two bays?

Maybe I made the wrong decision in an effort to help?

I'm in assuming I can get someone to cover the carry qualification I'm scheduled for that morning.

I'll post again if I can not get coverage. Otherwise, I'll be there.

If you think retirement is going to mean the end of hard labor, I think you are sorely mistaken.

I suspect you will find yourself so driven to do so many things you never had time for, you will be busier than you have ever been in your life.

But the difference you can expect is to start loving every minute of your time.

Congratulations!

Thanks to members who have offered options. And to local makers who have taken time to discuss custom rigs.

Just a quick post to update with my decision to order the Mernickle "Starter Rig." Pending the answer to a couple questions I will ask the maker, I will order shortly and it should arrive in 4-6 weeks.

I expect to use this rig for a year or so and figure out over time what changes I would like in a custom rig.

@Lightning McCoy

Just left you a voice mail.

Thanks for the pic. I'll take #10, the gun cart.

How many guns fit item 10, the gun cart? How wide is it?

I have a large cart but my lady is not shooting this sport yet.

And I can personally attest that it shoots well. I plan to knock down a lot of targets with it.

 :)

Thanks, Cumberland Mtn John!
