I had a blast at our inaugural wildbunch match. I started looking through the wildbunch handbook and noticed a shooting category for "Doughboy". I have been an avid military collector long before I started shooting SASS so naturally this category spoke to me. This class swaps out the lever action rifle for a period correct bolt action rifle, in reading the handbook the targets are typically set further out for shooters in this class due to the power of the cartridge. I would like to avoid extra setup hassle but also avoid damage to our targets. I wanted to field the question here.
The question:
I have been loading and shooting "gallery" loads out of my military rifles (30-06, 303B, 7.7Arisaka, 8mm Mauser) at the ORSA rifle steel range for years. Typically the projectile is 100-150grn with a light charge of pistol powder yields a muzzle velocity ~1100fps. For reference, my standard load for 38spl load (125grn projectile) out of my 18" 1892 is 1100fps and 750fps out of either the '51 Navy or Schofield. I typically load my gallery rounds with plated Berry's bullets, but this could easily be swapped for a soft lead cast projectile pursuant to the stipulations of SASS/Wildbunch shooting. Does this seem reasonable?
