What would you do?
« on: May 31, 2022, 07:11:56 AM »

Imagine a stage that has one position, ten rifle, ten handgun, and four-plus shotgun.  All targets are visible from the same location and starting position is SASS default, standing upright with arms loosely at sides.  Gun order is shooter's choice, rifle may not be last.

What's your preferred gun order and why?

Howdy,

Shotgun first, if I bobble the loading of first two rounds, I can have a restart.

Pistols last to avoid holstering pistols on the clock.

Starting with the shotgun is a good option ... but I am partial to ending with the shotgun.  With a 97, I would not have to worry about a hull in the shotgun when I discard it to shoot another gun.  I have not had a hull stick in my shotgun for a while (knock on wood) but it used to happen more frequently so I got paranoid.

I pretty much always shoot my long guns back to back since the transition is smoother.  The default starting position puts my hands right there by my pistols, so, long story short, I'd probably shoot it pistols, rifle, shotgun.

This plan would be reinforced if there were a complex pistols sequence to remember (I'm thinking of you, Badger Sweep) so I could do it while fresh in my mind.

As others have already stated, I like the shotgun first, pistols last idea.  I first learned of it from Last Kiss who said she learned it from Lassiter.  It's a good basic plan for gunfighters.

I also find merit in AM idea of shooting pistols first.  As a double cocking gunfighter (Jackalope sighs/swears at this point), pistol sequences can be complex and can be forgotten when not shot first.

There are so many extenuating circumstances/personal oddities to consider.  I'd like to hear from others... what would you do?  Would any specific stage feature change your first inclination?

I like pistols last for the holstering issue. I like to approach my long guns moving to the right, especially the rifle. So I would shoot rifle first from the left table. Shotgun second from the middle grabbing my shells on the way then pistols. From the same table shotgun, rifle , pistols.

This starting position puts my hands inches from my revolvers and, as AM mentioned, shooting long guns back to back is quite a lot quicker than splitting them.  In my opinion, those are two good reasons to start with handguns.  Now, for the extenuating circumstance/personal oddity...

I have a lot more faith in my ability to re-holster my revolvers efficiently than I do that both hulls will fly completely out of my double-barrel.  I know it's not unique to black powder, but fired hulls occasionally hang up in my chambers.  It's a time killer to pause a transition to pull an empty shell out to avoid the MSV.  Also, as a black powder shooter, it's sometimes hard to tell if the last shotgun knockdown went over until the smoke dissipates a little.  I would much rather shoot my shotgun last so any waiting isn't on the clock.

My preference is handguns, rifle, shotgun, with no misses or Ps.   :)

There are a lot of different aspects to this game. Reholstering revolvers is one of them and I have never really practiced doing it.
I was on Lassiter posse at KY state. Watched him shoot a stage that shotgun or revolvers could be first or last. Movement was involved. He shot his revolvers first. I asked him why. Answer was, yes most gunfighter will shoot revolvers last. However on that stage he believed he could reholster and move faster to the right than start with SG and move left.
I realize question was gun order for stand and delivery stage. Reholstering is something I need work on.

I'd probably do Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun hands are at Sass default meaning directly beside my pistol grips, Draw right pistol engage sequence whatever that may be, As holstering Left pistol with left hand use right hand retrieve rifle as coming up set left hand to forestock to steady rifle and lever rifle to send rounds down range, As laying rifle down with left hand the right hand is retrieving shotgun and the left hand is coming to the shotgun belt boom boom shuck, boom boom time stops. and if all goes according to plan as TW would say He'ssssss CLEAN!!! :-)
