Getting started with the '97
« on: August 23, 2021, 05:14:18 PM »
My SxS is down, need to learn the '97.

Thread on main forum here:

https://forums.sassnet.com/index.php?/topic/321637-need-help-getting-started-with-a-97/

Hoping to come shoot in October. Suggestion in that thread to ask for local help.

OK, can anyone please help?

Have all my guns, now need to learn reloading. Anyone want to volunteer to be my local mentor?

You get good with a 97 the same way you get to Canage Hall....practice, practice, practice.

We actually have some of the best 97 shooters in our club, I am not one of them by the way.

As Tom B Stone said, practice, practice, practice.

To that end, make some dummies to use.
They need to be light weight so No shot. Heavy ones will make the ejector break sooner. To that end, go ahead and order some  spare ejectors.  If you don't break some you aren't practicing enough. I believe it is Online Outpost who has the good ones.

To make mine l deprime the hull, seat a wad, then run through the starter and crimper dies.  I then put Shoe Goo in the primer hole. Using a wad gives a backing for the Shoe Goo. If you don't use the wad expect to have to add Shoe Goo after the first shot of it settles.
Set them with base up and let dry.

Then as Tom said........

Try 3 or 4 over the top with your weak hand, assuming you are right handed, and also the 2 in the side with your strong hand style. Whichever feels easiest is what I would practice most but you need to practice both in my opinion.
Your shotgun belt arraignment may dictate which works better for you at first.

I found that for me, when I shot a 97, 3 over the top and 1in the side worked best. I have hand problems and could not reliabily manipulate 4 shells with 1hand.
There are stories to go with these decisions but that's for another day.
