New Shooter

Howdy Outlaws!!

I’m considering doing some Cowboy action shooting. I am a longtime shooter and member of ORSA. I have shot IDPA, USPSA, Steel Challenge, and most recently 3-gun.   The only equipment I have at present is costume, gun cart, and eager attitude.  My question is:  Would it be easier to have pistols that are chambered same as rifle? 38/357?  I would like to compete in gunfighter class so would like both strong side holsters preferably not pointing towards my crotch... any recommendations on where to get rig?  Or any currently for sale ?  I’m used to semi-auto shotgun loading through 3 gun so I think pump shotgun would probably be easier but I’m open to breech load coach gun type. Any thoughts?  Also thoughts on Ruger vs colt vs Uberti?  I will be on vacation in October thru 2nd Saturday so won’t be able to come watch match but if there is another match nearby I would like to come watch. Any help would be appreciated.

Howdy DarkStar,

It's probably more convenient if your rifle and handguns can use interchangeable ammunition, particularly when it comes to reloading.

As far as pump v. side-by-side and Ruger v. Colt v. Uberti, etc...when you go to a match and make that inquiry, folks will almost always offer their guns for you to try out.  Try as many as you can before you make a purchase.

Hope to meet you soon,
