On our way to BorderTown
« on: October 09, 2024, 09:10:42 AM »
There is a group of us heading out to Tombstone for BorderTown towards to end of the month. Lady T and I have left a little early and plan to travel with Doc and Honey for a few weeks. I will try to do reports on things we see and do while we travel. If the rest of the crew want to post on this thread please do. I think there will be 10 or 11 of us shooting with a few just along for the ride. I will also try to keep this current on the Rangers page too.

We will do two one night stands to get us through Tennessee and Ark. then spend a few nights in Amarillo to catch our breath. Hopefully nothing today but smooth sailing down I-40.

Seven hours later we have made it through TN and AR, into OK. We are staying in Salasaw OK for the night. Just pushing through and hoping for event free travels. We should get to Amarillo for a few days starting tomorrow. Already thinking about that steak from the Big Texan, no not the 72 oz just a big steak.
Weather is great, no wind which is pretty big out here.

Seven hours later we have made it through TN and AK, into OK. ...

You made it through Tennesse and Alaska in seven hours?  That's some kind of record!

Have a good time and a safe trip.

Amarillo by morning, up from San Anton....Well, we made it to By God Texas yesterday. A long but boring day. We will spend a few days here to recoup and then head on to a small town called Tucumcari for one day, something for Lady T business. Then on to Elephant Butte for a few days of tourist activities.
Yesterday was hot and windy. Messed with mileage a little. We are at about 3500 ft and still hot as blazes. Should break in a few days, cant believe Doc and I had to wear our leathers on the bikes last time we were out here at the same time of year.

More later.

Looking forward to hearing about your Big Texan restaurant experience. Long Gulch and I enjoyed our dinner there, although there was a fly doing the backstroke through the gravy of his chicken fried steak (they did bring him a new one).

You could get lost in that place for a couple of hours because there is so much to see and do.

Safe travels!

We went to the Big Texan last night and it was great. We tend to eat early so did not have to wait for a table. Pretty long line when we left. There were a few trying the 72 oz steak, none of us of course. They still have the rattle snake, dang thing has grown in 4 years since our last trip out.
Traveled a short trip to Tucamcari and traveled down memory lane on Route 66, they have a stretch of 66 that they have preserved as best they could. Strip hotels, burger dives, lots of pot shops, OK maybe that was not from the old days but they have set them up in old gas stations and such.
We went to a collage rodeo tonight, great riders, had a good time but could not stay til the end. Late comes early out here in Mtn Time Zone.
Heading to Elephant Butte tomorrow for a few days. Looking forward to a half day in Hatch at the pepper shops.
Hope everyone is doing well, way to hot out here, looks like we left the nice weather back home.

Made it to Elephant Butte, event free for Lady T and I but not so event free for Horse Doc and Honey. They have had a string of really bad luck on this trip. Starting on the second night of our journey their big slide would not extend. They find a service guy that has a mobile shop to come take a look at it. Replaced the house batteries, still did not work. They decided to continue on. This afternoon they hit a tire tread that was in the middle of the interstate. It took out the steps and one of the stabilizers. Hell of a day/trip for our traveling partners.
Hope things get better soon.
We plan to poke around Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences tomorrow. Also going to Hatch tomorrow so should be a full day without too much travel.

"Road gators" are viscous! I hit one once that disabled my school van carrying the golf team on a road trip. No golf match that day, but a fun four hours at car dealership while the damage was repaired.

I hope their luck improves!

I'm enjoying reading the account of your adventures.

Another night in Elephant Butte then on to Tuscon. Lady T and I ran down to Hatch to pick up a few pieces of yard art we have been talking about, got some peppers of course. Still is cool to see the peppers on the roofs drying. Grabbed an early dinner because the time difference is a pain to get used to.
Doc and Honey have decide to keep going forward to Tuscon but I would put money he does not come home with the same camper he left home with. A man can only take so much frustration before something has to be done.

Tomorrow I get to set up for about a week so I get to get all the cooking toys out. I have found a Stainless Steel griddle to fit my Blackstone cooker. Just wait until I am cooking for the group again. I look like one of those Japanese chiefs spinning knives and tossing eggs. Well at least in my mind I do.

We found out this morning that Hombre Sin Nombre will not be able to join us in Tombstone so the was a dissapointment but I am looking forward to shooting out here again. I looked back through some of the Traveling post over the years. Ours only goes bace to 2015 but the Rangers have all of thiers and I found some from back in 2013, may be a few earlier.

I will let you all know how tomorrow goes, sure is beautiful out here, sure is short on green though.

Got into Tuscon and the Catalina State Park. Beautiful drive, no wildlife but the vistas are overwhelming.

We got set up ate a little dinner and are sitting in the dark out side looking at a huge sky. I wish we had had this kind of dark and sky last week while the solar storms were going on. It would have been amazing.

Anyway, if you are ever out here one of the best rest areas/stops is the Texas Canyon rest stop about 60 miles inside Arizona. Nothing fancy about the rest stop but the views and boulders are worth the stop.

Tomorrow is a catch up day for Lady T and I, I think Doc and Honey are gong into town to talk to a few RV dealers.
Never a dull moment around here. Sure is beautiful here but sure do miss my green mountains.

More later

Good morning from the beautiful Catalina State Park. I understand it is cold there but I must say this is hot out here. I dont care much about a dry heat. Hot is hot. This place is wonderful. Sitting at the base of a mountain range, the sun does not rise with color this close to the mountains, it just gets light behind the mountains and it is suddenly light. We have had some amazing sunsets and a truly breath taking moon rise last night as it crested the mountain range behind us. The park is full of paths and trails. It is a very popular place for the locals to come and ride bikes, horses and walk with their dogs. I even saw a few runners but I try to avoid those folks. People running with nothing chasing them. Strange.

We got stuff done yesterday without actually doing any tourist things. Changed two batteries in the Costo parking lot. Doc and Honey went down and talked to a few RV dealers. May be getting things worked out on that front.

We are heading to Old Tuscon today. I understand there are a lot of movie settings there so we are taking a tour so we can get all the interesting sites and stories.

I know some folks are heading this way starting in the next few days, safe travels and keep your eyes open, there is more to see out here than you can take in. Sensory overload is how it feels sometimes.

I will try to post some pictures after my IT department wakes up and tells me how to do it.
